Reducing car travel
As an island, Guernsey has a finite space and road system which has for some years been under pressure due to the high volumes of traffic. By reducing car travel, particularly single occupancy car travel, Travel Plans can help reduce traffic congestion, improve the environment by reducing CO2 emissions, reduce noise pollution and free up car parking spaces for those who need to use a motor vehicle. Those who choose alternative means to work can also benefit from reduced motoring costs, and improved health and wellbeing. See how you benefit from not choosing the car.
Travel planning focuses on understanding peoples’ travel habits and supporting changes to more sustainable alternatives. These alternatives could be to encourage more cycling, walking or lift sharing. Other areas of travel planning could be to facilitate more use of buses or motorcycles/scooters.

How you benefit
If you choose to walk, cycle or only walk to a bus stop, you can benefit from active travel:
- Reduces stress
- Improves sleep
- Low-impact exercise
- Maintains a healthy weight
- Improves mood
- Saves money on petrol
- No traffic jams
- No parking issues
Walking or cycling is a great way to get in some daily, low-impact exercise and can significantly improve your overall health. Cycling to work can help improve cardiovascular health, strengthen muscles and improve balance and coordination. Active travel has even been proven to prolong your life.
Remember, just doing active travel once or twice a week can make a difference to your health, wealth and the environment.

Walking
All types of regular physical activity improve long-lasting physical and mental health. Yet local surveys show that many children, young people and adults in the Bailiwick do not meet recommendations for physical activity. The Health Improvement Commission aims to get more of us active through everyday physical activity. Living Streets has provided an A1 map, which shows half-mile and one-mile distances from Admiral Park to encourage walkers, and we devised some leaflets with maps showing safe walking routes from St Peter Port and the north of the island.
Buses
Admiral Park is well-connected and served by CT Plus. Tickets can be bought on the bus using a contactless payment, such as a debit card or smartphone. Pay As You Go puffinpass is available from the Town Terminus Shop. Further top-ups for the Pay As You Go pass can be done at the Town Terminus Shop, on the buses or on the bus website. The website planner function provides a quick and easy way of planning your journey. With the tracker reinstated, it means waiting passengers also have the ability to check if the bus is on its way if it is delayed for any reason. They have also just launched a bus app to make accessing information on the go easier.
Cycling
Very often cycling can be as quick going from door to door compared to other transport forms. Cycling can be incorporated into other daily routines such as taking the children to school. With the increasing popularity of e-bikes, cycling has never been easier to incorporate into daily life, making more challenging routes a little easier. Admiral Park is lucky enough to have pedestrian and cycle-safe infrastructure along one route towards the Plaza. The cycle and pedestrian lanes run all along Les Banques and St George’s Esplanade with appropriate traffic light crossings into the Plaza. For your personal bicycles, a bike park shelter is available by the multi-story car park.
Car sharing
Car sharing is a new concept for Guernsey, but it is a widely utilised form of transport for commuters in the UK and other countries worldwide. The benefits of car sharing are reduced congestion issues, ease parking difficulties and save money.
